In 2008, six cannons and other artifacts believed to have come from Captain Morgan's ships, were discovered on a shallow reef near the mouth of the Panama Canal.  There has been ongoing study of the find by various groups including the Waitt Institute, Texas State University and the NOAA in conjunction with the Panamanian government.  The decision to remove the cannons was made last week when research divers found what appeared to be treasure hunter's attempts at removing artifacts.

A team of international marine archeologists last week began work to safely pry the six cannons from the reef and remove them for further study.

British pirateer, Captain Morgan, is a legend in the Caribbean.  The cannons and other artifacts, if they are indeed proven to have come from one of his ships, could be the only physical evidence to tie the Captain to the region.
