Every once in a while, we hear a rumor that is a bit different than normal—something “out of the box.”
That’s exactly what we have here in a leaked report: Canon is developing an SD card-shaped WiFi adapter. This comes via a leaked report from digicame-info, which doesn’t necessarily spell out where this W-E1 WiFi adapter fits. However, given the dimension specs are the same as a standard SD card (24.0mm x 32.0mm x 2.1mm), it is safe to assume the adapter slides in just like any other memory card.
The implication is that by inserting this faux-memory card, you will be able to connect to a smartphone to view and transfer files. It is even possible – though not practical for underwater photography – that your smartphone will be able to control the camera through the adapter.
It is possible that this could serve some use for underwater photography. The most likely scenario is inserting a CFast card for memory storage in one slot and the W-E1 adapter in the secondary SD slot as a way to wirelessly upload images without having to remove the camera from the housing.
Check out the original report via digicame-info.
