If you saw Canon’s announcement of its RF replacement for the venerable EF 8–15mm f/4L Fisheye zoom and wondered why they couldn’t just make an ultra-fast ultra-wide prime lens, well, you weren’t paying attention. Canon did, in fact, unveil two lenses—the RF 7–14mm f/2.8–3.5L Fisheye STM and the (rectilinear) RF 14mm f/1.4L VCM.
The new lens is the latest addition to its f/1.4L VCM prime series, which comprises the RF 20mm f/1.4L VCM, RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM, RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM, RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM, and RF 85mm f/1.4L VCM. Now, with the arrival of the RF 14mm f/1.4L VCM, there’s finally a lens that will really excite underwater photographers—and many wide-angle shooters will immediately draw comparisons with the only other similar lens on the market, the L-mount or Sony E-mount Sigma 14mm f/1.4 DG Art.
Sporting 18 elements arranged across 13 groups, the Canon RF 14mm f/1.4L VCM features a fluorite lens, an ultra-low dispersion (UD) element, and a blue spectrum (BR) refractive optic (designed to minimize chromatic aberrations), as well as three glass-molded aspherical elements (designed to maximize edge sharpness). The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.5 inches (24cm).
Available later in February, the Canon RF 14mm f/1.4L VCM has a suggested retail price of $2,600.
