Canon Unveils PowerShot G7 X Mark III

Around two-and-a-half years since the launch of the PowerShot G7 X Mark II, Canon has announced its successor, the Mark III. While the camera sports the same fast 24–100mm (equiv.) f/1.8–f/2.8 built-in lens, there’s a new sensor on-board: a 1-inch 20-megapixel stacked CMOS affair, which we’ve previously only seen in Sony models. For the uninitiated, a stacked sensor features a dedicated layer for collecting image data plus a layer dedicated to processing this data—technology which aids high-speed, high-resolution imaging.

In the video department, whereas the Mark II only offers Full HD recording at 60p, the G7 X Mark III delivers 4K at 30p as well as 1080p at up to 120p for smooth slow-motion playback. Videographers will be pleased to hear that 4K/30p is recorded with no crop. The G7 X Mark III can also shoot RAW bursts at up to 20fps with AE/AF locked, but this drops to 8.3fps when shooting with continuous AF.

If you want to vlog about your latest dive exploits once you’re back on dry land, the Mark III has got you covered: Not only does it have the Mark II’s 3-inch touchscreen that tilts all the way up, you can now stream live over YouTube at the press of a button. The battery will give you just 235 shots per charge, but the camera can be powered via USB-C, so the savvy underwater housing manufacturer has the option of making space for a portable battery pack.

Available in black or silver, the G7 X Mark III is shipping in August and will retail for $750.
