Alongside the pro-level EOS R1, Canon also announced the release of an updated version of its hugely popular EOS R5, released four years ago—the EOS R5 Mark II. Like its predecessor, the Mark II takes 45-megapixel images, but the sensor is a newly developed affair that is back-illuminated and stacked, promising faster read-out speeds like the EOS R1. And like the new flagship pro camera, the EOS R5 II packs the DIGIC X processor along with the DIGIC Accelerator co-processor. Canon says the AF system in the R5 II is faster and more accurate, and the camera can shoot up to 30fps using its electronic shutter (full-resolution RAW images with AF)—with less rolling shutter than that of the EOS R5.
As you’d expect, video capabilities receive a boost, as well. The EOS R5 Mark II can record 8K DCI (8192 x 4320) or 8K (7680 x 4320) RAW internally at up to 60p (up from 8K/30p with the R5)—though 8K/60p footage is captured in Light RAW, not Standard RAW. It’s also possible to capture oversampled 4K/60p and pixel-binned 4K/120p video, both using the full sensor width. The camera supports Canon Log 2/Log 3.
To round things off, you get Eye Control AF like on the R1 and R3, a 5.76M-dot EVF with 0.76x magnification and selectable 120fps or 60fps refresh rate (twice the brightness of the EOS R5’s EVF), a fully articulating 3.2-inch 2.1M-dot LCD, and dual card slots (CFexpress and SD UHS-II). While the EOS R5 II can use the battery that was launched with the original EOS R5 (LP-EP6NH), users will need the new LP-EP6P battery to be able to make full use of the new camera.
Available from August, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II will cost $4,300 (body only).
