Canon has released major firmware updates for the EOS R6 and EOS-1D X Mark III, which allow the cameras to capture video in Canon Log 3 and record to two memory cards at the same time. Canon Log 3 is a handy alternative for videographers that want to shoot Log but don't want to spend the time and effort needed to grade Canon Log 2. Log 3 delivers roughly 14 stops of dynamic range compared to 15 stops in Log 2, which means the latter requires more work in post-production.
The updates also squash various bugs and bring other minor improvements. In particular, the EOS-1D X Mark III update fixes an issue where switching from still mode to movie mode wasn’t changing the settings accordingly.
Head to Canon’s website to download firmware version 1.4.0 for the R6 and firmware version 1.5.0 for the 1D X Mark III (macOS/Windows). Check out the video below to understand the differences between the different Canon Log profiles.
