Canon Develops World's Biggest CMOS Sensor
By Drew Wohl, August 31, 2010 @ 02:09 PM (EST)
Canon is making more noise (well actually reducing noise hopefully) in the sensor world. Last week Canon announced the 120 MP APS-H Sensor and today they announced the worlds largest CMOS sensor - 202 mm x 205 mm (7.95 inches x 8.07 inches).
It is drool worthy to note that the sensor is claimed to be able in 1/100 of the light needed by professional level dSLRs and can shoot 60FPS in 0.3 lux.
Now hopefully they can take some of the technology and bring it into dSLR sensors. I enjoy the low light capability of my Canon 5D Mark II and since the new sensor requires 1/100th of the light, it should be good for an extra stop or two.
Kidding aside, though physical size of the sensor may present a roadblock, sensor development is always good news as new technologies trickle down to the sensors we normally use.
And perhaps there will be a larger format camera from Canon down the road. I wonder how big the camera and housing will be for this...
