Canon Announces the RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro Lens
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, April 15, 2021 @ 08:30 AM (EST)

When Canon introduced its first full-frame mirrorless camera back in September 2018, the EOS R, the most exciting news—apart from the missing mirror—was the new RF mount. Unfortunately, the four lovely new RF-mount lenses announced alongside the camera weren’t very underwater friendly. It took nearly a year before wide-angle underwater shooters could finally get excited about the new mount, with the arrival of the RF 15–35mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens. And now, finally, it’s the turn of the macro photographers and videographers as Canon announces its first RF-mount lens for close-up imaging, the RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens.

Interestingly, the headline-grabber isn’t the RF mount, but a novel feature Canon is calling a spherical aberration (SA) control ring. This dial allows the user to “change the character and appearance of the bokeh and obtain a softer focus effect”—by under- or over-correcting spherical aberration. It will be interesting to see whether, and how effectively, this feature can be used on underwater subjects. The lens also offers a customizable control ring that allows users to adjust settings such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.

The new L-series lens has 17 elements in 13 groups, is sealed against moisture and dust, and boasts a fluorine coating on the front element to repel oil and water. Flare and ghosting is controlled by way of a “Super Spectra” coating. Autofocus uses two Nano USM linear motors rather than the ring-type ultrasonic motor found in the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. The minimum focus distance is 10 inches (26cm), with an impressive maximum magnification of 1.4x. The lens’ image stabilization system reduces shake by up to 5 stops, and this increases to 8 stops when used in combination with a stabilized camera body, like the EOS R5. The lens takes 67mm filters.

Shipping in July, the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM has an MSRP of $1,400.

PRESS RELEASE

The Canon RF100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM lens is not only Canon’s first RF lens designed specifically for macro photography, but also the world’s first[1] medium telephoto macro lens with a maximum magnification of 1.4x. The new lens, designed for both advanced photo enthusiasts and professionals, takes macro photography expression to the next level with the introduction of a spherical aberration (SA) control ring. The SA control ring allows users to change the character and appearance of the bokeh and obtain a softer focus effect with a simple turning of the ring to the desired result.

Additional features of the Canon RF100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM include:

  • Optical Image Stabilizer with up to five stops of Shake Correction[2].
  • When combined with a camera featuring In-Body Image Stabilizer, up to eight stops of shake correction[3] is possible with coordinated operation of Optical and In-Body Image Stabilizer.
  • Hybrid IS helps to compensate for angular and shift camera shake during macro shooting.
  • High-speed, smooth and quiet auto focus with dual nano USM.
  • Customizable control ring that allows photographers to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture or ISO.
  • Rugged Canon L-series dust and water-resistant design.

The Canon RF100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM, Canon RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM and Canon RF600mm F4L IS USM are scheduled to be available in July 2021 for an estimated retail price of $1,399.00, $11,999.00 and $12,999.00, respectively*. For more information, please visit usa.canon.com.
