Camera Company Helps Protect Malaysian Reefs
By Matt J. Weiss, September 28, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Panasonic Malaysia is giving back to the country in a unique way – by protecting the reefs of Perhentian Island. This makes sense for Panasonic, who makes the underwater housings and had one of the biggest booths at MIDE, the Malaysian International Dive Expo.

Recently, Panasonic just returned from Pulau Perhentian, a popular dive spot on the East Coast of mainland Malaysia. They were they for the fourth consecutive year working on their artificial reef project.

The artificial reefs are made out of PVC pipes and are used a hard structure for coral polyps to attach to. The polyps can’t attach to sediment, which is becoming more and more prominent as corals disappear due to bleaching and careless tourists, so the PVC pipe could be a fantastic way to bring back some coral.

Panasonic is in no way a major underwater camera player compared to Sony or Olympus at least, but they are making their effect on the underwater world which is priceless.

DivePhotoGuide applauds Panasonic Malaysia for pursuing this worthy task.
