California Moves to Add Sharks to Endangered Species List
Even the ocean’s fiercest predator needs a helping hand (or fin).
And the Great White Shark might just get it after the California Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously to consier a petition to make the predator an endangered species.
The positive news is paired with some more sobering facts—the proponents of the petition point to a new study claiming there may be less than 350 Great Whites left in California waters.
“It is very gratifying to have worked so hard on this and to have the committee vote unanimously,” David McGuire, director of Sea Stewards, one of the three groups who filed the petition, told the New York Daily News in an article. “The great white needs greater protection.”
