Boston Sea Rovers 2008
By Jason Heller, March 12, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
I just returned from the 54th Boston Sea Rovers clinic, the oldest running dive show in the country. I was invited to give a presentation on the changing landscape that the internet creates for underwater photographers & videographers (and all divers really) as it relates to learning, sharing and even making money with your images or videos. This is a topic near and dear to my heart and one that you obviously understand well...because you are reading this website.
The show was a great one. I caught up with many friends and prominent figures in the world of underwater imaging. Maybe we'll see you there next year!
The historic Fairmont Copley Plaza in the heart of Boston is the home of
the Sea Rovers. The show is noticeably smaller than most of the dive expos
around the country, but I quickly realized that this was indeed a benefit, as
it allowed for a lot of networking with the high caliber attendees and friends.

John from Gates Housings shows off the RED One camera. Typical
high-end HD camcorders have 2.1M pixel sensors and record with 3:1:1
color sub-sampled video at up to 30fps. We deliver 12M pixels at up to
60fps and record wide dynamic range and color space 12 bit native RAW.
Gates will be the only manufacturer we know working on releasing a housing
for this bad boy by the end of the year.

A view of the back of the RED one, notice the CF card slot on the left
side of the camera. Alternatively you can configure the camera with a
hard drive instead.

Apparently there is a tradition at the Sea Rovers, where the guests of
honor get their heads dunked in a bowl of yellow colored vodka mix. I
had to get the shot of Bob Talbot getting the dunk - sorry Bob!
My new friend Steve Drogin (a great photographer), the legendary Bob
Talbot & Fred Dion (UW Photo Tech and former long time preseident of
the Boston Sea Rovers)
Fellow NY'er Pat Rooney and Dave Sipperly, one of the content chairs of
the Sea Rovers, enjoy a laugh after we missed the last bus back from the
Gamble Mansion on Friday night.

This little contraption caught my eye - I think I found my new rig!

Zig Armand, the Executive Director of Beneath The Sea (another fellow
NY'er), gets into the shark cage for us. Now all we need is some water
and sharks and it would be even more fun and exciting!

Jim Strayer, Faith (DUI wetsuits), Pat Strayer and Jill Heinereth (a
prominent nderwater cinematographer and cave diver who is also in
the women's diving hall of fame)

Dan Orr from the Diver's Alert Network
Randy from Explorer Ventures was one of the few folks gettin' down at
the Saturday night film festival after party. Play that funky music white boy!
Keri Wilk (ReefNet) showed us the new Caribbean Sea Slugs book. I never
knew how many nudibranches and sea slugs existed in the Caribbean!
This book is a must have for Caribbean diving nudibranch fanatics!
Our parting shot...

"You better write about it or I'll dump this garbage on your head!"
