Biscayne National Park Proposes Marine Reserve, Faces Criticism

In an attempt to strengthen its coral reefs, Biscayne National Park, in southern Florida, has proposed a 10,522 acre marine reserve where boats and fishing would be off-limits. Snorkeling and diving would still be allowed. The proposal has drawn heavy criticism from fishermen and officials.
Just seven percent of the park would be affected, leaving over 150,000 acres still open to fishing and boating, but some believe a less limiting approach should be taken.
Biscayne National Park is unique in that it is more than 90 percent underwater.
