Bioluminescent Magic off of California's Big Sur Coast
Bixby Bridge, in Monterey County, California already holds the title for the most photographed bridge in the state. However, a recent bioluminescent phytoplankton bloom under the bridge has photographers flocking to the already popular spot—which lies on California's Big Sur coast. The phytoplankton is producing a glowing blue blanket of magic just below the surface.
Steve Haddock of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute said “It is almost certainly a dinoflagellate bloom. We are also seeing relative high bioluminescence with our instruments here in Monterey Bay.” According to Haddock, an "influx of nutrients" is usually what leads to a bloom such as this.
