There’s been buzz aplenty around Panasonic’s flagship Micro Four-Thirds interchangeable-lens compact camera, the GH4. As the only mirrorless camera currently on the market offering 4K video recording, it’s proving to be a hit among subsea videographers who want to find out what all the fuss is about ultra-high definition filming.
The GH4’s quad-core image-processing engine doesn’t just make light work of 4K video; it also allows users to get great dynamic range and low-light performance from the 16-megapixel sensor—not to mention an impressive 12 frames-per-second continuous burst. Underwater housing manufacturers are paying attention too, with some excellent options to choose from, including the Aquatica AGH4, Nauticam NA-GH4, and Ikelite’s GH4 Housing.
Not ones to believe all the hype without thorough testing, the folks at Backscatter have now put the GH4 through its paces. In their new review, Jim Decker and Russ Sanoian share their results on underwater performance and give recommendations for each style of shooter. Showing the capabilities of the GH4 through videos (also in 4K) as well as still images, the article is a worthwhile read for anyone considering moving up to ultra-high def.
