If you love turtles—and who doesn’t?—there are few places more perfect for swimming with, and photographing, these graceful animals than Bunaken National Park in the north of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island. And if you want to enjoy this exceptional slice of the Coral Triangle in luxurious comfort, there’s no better base than the wonderful Siladen Resort & Spa. One of the most popular resorts in North Sulawesi, Siladen is a fantastic choice if you love photographing the stunning walls and reefs, discovering alien critters of the deep while blackwater diving, or just kicking back and enjoying incredible cuisine.
The Siladen team also takes its sustainability and conservation responsibilities seriously, and they work with the local village to help secure the turtle nests dotted around the white sandy beaches. If a clutch is in a vulnerable position, the team relocates it to a safer spot just after the eggs are laid, ensuring that conditions are carefully replicated, where possible, with the same nest depth, positioning of eggs, and distance from the water.
As it happens, there’s a bumper crop in the offing—all four turtle nests around the resort are due to hatch in May! The first clutch of 129 eggs is estimated to hatch on May 5th; the second (99 eggs), on the 18th; the third (33 eggs), on the 26th; and the fourth (125 eggs), on May 27th. If you want to witness adorable baby turtles scrambling out of their nests, this is the ideal time to hop on a plane and treat yourself to a stay at Siladen—there are still some rooms available for next month’s “hatchling-fest”!
