The Bahamas Marine Mammal Stranding Network sprang into action last week when a report of a beached bottlenose dolphin was received from West Andros Island. Dr. Charles Manire and other team members from Atlantis Dolphin Cay made the short flight to West Andros to evaluate the stranded dolphin.
The dolphin, which has been named “Miss Turner,” upon initial examination was found to have a curvature in her spine and a severe sunburn on the dorsal fin area. Charles Bethell, an Andros based pilot who first reported the dolphin, provided sea plane transportation for the team and their patient back to Nassua.
Once at the Dolphin Cay facility at the Atlantis resort, further examination and testing revealed that Miss Turner was also suffering from a stomach infection and severe dehydration. She was placed in quarantine and has been given the appropriate medications, fluids and also 24-7 in-water assistance. Dolphin Cay specialists also began physical therapy to reduce the curvature in the spine.

The team are hopeful for a full recover, and eventual release back into the wild.
The full story about the rescue and rehabilitation of “Miss Turner,” can be found in The Bahamas Weekly.
