Ocean explorer journalist Brian Lam will be following Sylvia Earle and other divers as they conduct what could be the last operation for Aquarius, an undersea base in Key Largo Florida that has hosted over 350 projects.
Sylvia Earle, something of a living legend when it comes to underwater exploration, is an ocean scientist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. For this coming Aquarius project, she and other divers will be expected to spend seven full days underwater without returning to the surface.
The Aquarius is a metal structure that rests on the floor of the ocean. After many years, it has begun to blend in with the ocean and is host to all kinds of sea life: corals, barnacles, limpets, and fish. It will be the home base for scientists like Sylvia Earle as well when they need to take a break from working to eat and sleep.

For this coming project, Earle and other aquanauts along with Brian Lam will attempt to document the many benefits of ocean research as well as the complicated technology that allows such research. Sadly, this could be the last mission hosted by Aquarius as it along with its sister program has lost funding from NOAA.
