When Apple announced its latest four iPhones in October, it also hailed the imminent arrival of a new photo format called ProRAW, which combines the company’s Deep Fusion and Smart HDR technology with the editing flexibility of RAW. Now, with the newly released iOS version 14.3, the new format is available for the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.
ProRAW allows you to take advantage of the iPhone’s Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, and Night Mode technology while shooting RAW, with all the post-processing flexibility that brings. Previously, you had to shoot in JPEG (or HEIC) format in order to make use of that tech. According to Apple, the 12-bit DNG file offers up to 14 stops of dynamic range.
To use ProRAW, you’ll need to go to Settings > Camera > Formats to enable it. You will then be able to hit the RAW button in the top-right corner of the camera app to shoot ProRAW images. You can also use Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings to force the app to remember your setting.
For underwater shooters putting their new iPhone 12 Pro into a housing like the new SeaLife SportDiver, it will be interesting to see what benefits the new ProRAW format brings in terms of dynamic range and controlling noise.
