AOI Updates UCS-Q1 Strobe with On-board Flash Emulation
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, June 15, 2026 @ 08:30 PM (EST)

AOI has released an updated version of its UCS-Q1 strobe, introduced back in 2021. The “2027 Edition” of the strobe features a new slave TTL mode that the company says offers “a convenient, entry-level automatic lighting option that is perfect for beginners and novices.” Other specs remain the same as the orginal’s.

According to AOI, the Q1 mirrors the behavior of the internal flash of your camera—“working seamlessly with multiple camera brands”—to deliver automated exposure control. Users can customize the output to match their specific camera brand by fine-tuning the strobe’s automated exposure. Specifically, the updated strobe works with AOI’s brand-new housing the Canon EOS R50.

Shipping now from retailers such as Backscatter, the UCS-Q1 2027 Edition strobe costs $380 and is available in black and white.

PRESS RELEASE

AOI Updates Red Dot Award-Winning UCS-Q1 Ultra Compact Strobe with Onboard Flash Emulation
The compact strobe receives a functional upgrade while maintaining its original, accessible price point

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - AOl Ltd. has announced an update to its Red Dot Design Award-winning UCS-Q1 Ultra Compact Strobe. A proven performer capable of handling everything from macro to wide-angle photography, the latest production model of the UCS-Q1 now features a built-in mechanism that emulates a camera's onboard flash to create an automatic exposure. This new functionality will come standard on all new UCS-Q1 units, offering a convenient, entry-level automatic lighting option that is perfect for beginners and novices. The strobe retains the affordable pricing and core features of the original model.

Accessible Automation and Brand Compatibility

The updated feature allows the UCS-Q1 to mirror the behavior of a camera's internal flash to deliver automated exposure control. This system offers cross-brand compatibility, working seamlessly with multiple camera brands as long as the camera utilizes an internal or onboard flash. To accommodate the variance in flash behaviors between different manufacturers, the strobe's automated exposure can be fine-tuned, allowing users to customize the output to match their specific camera brand.

A prime example of this seamless integration is when the updated UCS-Q1 is used with the Canon EOS R50 inside AOl's newly launched UH-R50 underwater housing. Because the strobe's automatic exposure can be tailored to the exact nuances of individual camera systems, creators using this new setup can rely on effortless, automated lighting that perfectly complements the compact footprint of the R50 system.

While the more specialized variants in the Q1 lineup —the UCS-Q1RC and UCS-Qi-continue to offer highly precise, dedicated RC TTL and Sony TTL metering, this new feature provides a practical, budget-friendly steppingstone for novice divers seeking simpler exposure management without constant manual adjustment.

Unchanged Form Factor, Full Accessory Compatibility

Because this update is an internal upgrade of the existing UCS-Q1, the physical dimensions and housing design of the strobe are perfectly maintained. This ensures that all existing Q1 accessories are fully compatible and can be used seamlessly with the new model. Among these compatible accessories is the recently launched AOI SNT-03 optical snoot. Beginner and novice photographers looking to explore creative macro lighting can easily mount the SNT-03 to the upgraded strobe, utilizing its adjustable iris control to isolate small subjects cleanly and precisely.

A Proven Performer for Macro and Wide-Angle

Aside from the exposure update, all physical and operational specifications of the original Red Dot winner remain unchanged. It continues to deliver reliable versatility across different shooting styles:

  • Versatile Performance: A proven solution for both fine-detail macro photography and broader wide-angle scenes.
  • Ultra-Compact Form Factor: Designed for easy travel and streamlined underwater handling.
  • Guide Number 22: Provides sufficient power for a wide variety of scenarios.
  • 700-Lumen LED Focus Light: Includes a 3-level brightness adjustment for aiming and night diving.
  • Straightforward Controls: A single large knob designed for easy operation, even when wearing gloves with intuitive interface.
  • 18650 Battery Power: Uses standard Li-ion batteries to maintain reliable recycle times.

“The UCS-Q1 has always been about bringing functional, ultra-compact lighting to a broader audience, which helped earn it a Red Dot Design Award,” said Victor Tsui, the Managing Director of AOl Ltd. “By introducing onboard flash emulation with fine-tuning capabilities for multiple camera brands, alongside seamless integration with our existing accessories like the new SNT-03 optical snoot, we are making it even easier for beginners and novices to expand their creative toolkit. It sits appropriately as an accessible option below our dedicated UCS-Q1RC and UCS-Qli variants, delivering solid utility without increasing the cost.”

Pricing and Availability

The upgraded AOI UCS-Q1 will begin shipping in June to distributors and will replace the original first-generation model as the standard configuration moving forward. The strobe retains its original, highly competitive retail price.
