Announcing July Photo Contest Winners
By Lia Barrett, August 12, 2014 @ 06:00 AM (EST)

In celebration of the second to last DPG monthly photo contest, we chose the theme "Sharks," for it has traditionally been one of our most popular topics. We received quite a number of stellar entries, so it is no wonder the judging panel was a bit divided in their voting. But ultimately, it was this classically beautiful whale shark image by Christian Schlamann that took top honors. So congratulations to Christian, who will receive a GoPro tray from the kind folks at Equinox!

Coming in the number two spot is this stunning over-under shot by Lauric Thiault. The subtle composition and the lone blacktip reminds us of our vulnerability in such a vast world.

And finally, in for third is none other than Goos Van Der Heide, who has been a frequent placer in our DPG photo contest history. Goos' intimate hammerhead image is a simple yet striking encounter with one of the oceans' most iconic creatures.

Thanks so much to all of the DPG readers who contributed images—it was certainly a joy to look through so many inspiring photographs. And as always, thank so much to the DPG judging panel: Editors Matt Weiss, Ian Seldrup, Joe Tepper, and Lia Barrett, as well as Mr. Jeff de Guzmann.
