Announcing "Wrecks and Artificial Reefs" Winner
By Lia Barrett, February 12, 2014 @ 06:00 AM (EST)

DPG would like to extend our congratulations to Nick Blake for taking home the top prize for January's rather tough photo contest.  "Wrecks and Artificial Reefs" is by no means the easiest shooting category, so kudos to Nick for your outstanding airplane image!  Nick will receive a package of Prawno goodies, including some soft tees and  hoodies!

Nick's image is of a purposefully sunk G-BVOV Hawker Siddeley (HS) 748 found its final resting place in a quarry in Capernwray, Lancashire (UK).  The plane was once a full-sized airliner from the 1960s, and could carry up to 48 passengers.  Unfortunately, it met its doom when a pilot ran it off the runway at Guernsey Airport in 2006.

Our second place honors go to Dmitry Starostenkov for his image of the Salem Express.  Located in the Red Sea, this once active ferry went down in 1991 after crashing into the reef.  Two ominously resting life boats symbolize the many lives unfortunately not saved.

Our third place image is a fairly newer wreck that was taken off of Eliat, Isreal, the most northern tip of the Red Sea by Shai Oron.  Sunk in 2010, the wreck was once a tourist boat.  And with recent desert floods, seabeds in the area were covered with a fine sediment, which, when swells pick up, create an ostensible "mist."  .

Congratulations to all of our January winners, and many thanks to all who entered.  And as always, thank you to our superstar DPG Judges for taking time out of their busy schedules to vote: DPG Editors Matt Weiss, Joe Tepper, and Lia Barrett, as well as Mr. Keri Wilk.

We would also like to extend additional gratitude to Prawno Apparel for providing cool and cozy prizes!  Be sure to enter your "Your Best Shot" for our February contest ending at 11:59 p.m. on February 28th.

More About Prawno

Prawno was born from a love of marine life and dive culture.  Underwater photographer Lia Barrett creates each design by pulling imagery directly from underwater imagery.  Among other animals are manta rays from Western Australia, squid from Indonesia, and even a deep sea squat lobster shot from Karl Stanley's submarine below 2,000 feet.  Discreetly placed within the designs are locations and depths at which the marine animals were photographed.

Prawno is committed to promoting deep sea awareness and supporting ocean conservation and coastal community empowerment projects.  Beyond donating a portion of all proceeds to organizations focusing on these issues, Prawno has partnered with the TruBlue Foundation to create designs to support the protection of the critically endangered Maui's dolphin, and has created an exclusive design to benefit Manta Trust.
