Archaeologists working in a small, Greek archipelago made a large find when they rediscovered 22 wrecks in a singly location.
Nearly two-dozen wrecks have been 3D mapped by a Greek-American research team. Perhaps most impressive: All of the wrecks are located within 17 square miles of the eastern Aegean islands of Samos and Icaria. Archaeologists added 12 percent to known wrecks within Greek waters in the span of two weeks.
Freedivers, fisherman, and local sponge divers all contributed to the efforts, which just might have put this small area on the map as the ancient shipwreck capital of the world. The wrecks span from 400 B.C.E. to the middle ages, signaling the importance of these waters for commerce and travel for more than a millennia.
More information on this amazing find can be found on Discovery’s blog. Let’s hope we can dive on some of these historic wrecks soon!
