Africa Establishes Its First Transfrontier Marine Park
Africa has connected the World Heritage Site, Maputaland, in South Africa with Mozambique's The Ponto de Ouro, an MPA, to create one, large transfrontier marine park.
There will be no commercial fishing, fishing on coral reefs or explosive fishing allowed in the park. Additionally, recreational fishing will be heavily monitored.
The park covers 300km of unbroken coastline, 220km on the South Africa side and 80km on Mozambique's side. The park is seen as a crucial step towards protecting marine turtles that nest on the protected beaches as well as other endangered species.
Mozimbique is apparently a vital nursery for commercially important fish stocks. The areas being protected will help these fish stocks, which will in return benefit not only the ecosystems, but also the the people of both countries.
