20 Coral Species Added to Threatened Species List

In a late August ruling, 20 additional coral species have been added to the U.S. list of threatened species and will receive protection under the Endangered Species Act. Previously, only two species of coral--elkhorn and staghorn--were listed.
At this point, the protections will mainly affect federal agencies (for example the Environmental Protection Agency) attempting to work in areas that the threatened species inhabit. Restrictions on tourism, fishing, or fertilizer use are not yet in place but could be added in the future.
The 20 newly added coral species come from waters surrounding the Indo-Pacific U.S. territories as well as from the Caribbean. They include species of pillow coral, star coral, and rough cactus coral.
