In 1888, a passenger steamer carrying 90 passengers collided with an incoming ship at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Within six minutes, the ship sank and until now has been largely forgotten.
The ship, named the City of Chester, was passing through the Golden Gate when it was struck by the Oceanic, which was arriving in from Asia. It sunk, taking 16 peoples’ lives. Although the shipwreck’s location was known following the crash, over time it was forgotten.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) relocated the wreck on Wednesday, April 23rd, when conducting a sonar survey in the bay. They were able to zoom in on the ship and could even make out the damage from the crash on the port side of the boat.
At this point, there are no plans to raise the shipwreck or send divers down to explore it.
