Biography of Underwater Photographer Allison Vitsky

I learned to dive in 1992, but I never had much interest in imaging (underwater or on land) until 2006, when I visited the Solomon Islands. The combined exposure to Indopacific marine life and some fantastic photographers on my trip (Cor Bosman and Julie Edwards) inspired me, and I started taking a camera with me on every dive. A work move from Boston to San Diego in 2007 put me in an ideal position to pursue my new obsession year-round (and surround myself with people of like mind).

When I'm not underwater, I work as a veterinarian. Most of my free time is spent fiddling with camera and dive gear and pulling out my well-worn credit card to purchase more gear and trips to places where I can dive without a drysuit. I just upgraded to a Canon 7D, which is in a Subal housing with dual Sea and Sea YS250 strobes.

Hi, Leo leo - this is a Sola Photo 500. It was only used as a spotting light (several dives were at night or very early in the morning), but it wasn't used to take any of the photos.

Stew, thank you so much for you nice comment!!! I took (and I am not exaggerating, I may be underestimating) about 200 shots of these guys on two different dives, and I think my dive guide was bored out of his mind and coming up with ways to poison me on the second dive. Only about 8 shots turned out with all eyes in sharp focus - those tiny little eyes are tough! av

Thanks so much, Jason - and judges - and, of course, Subsee!! Congrats to the other winners, as well :) And to think, some people call my nudibranch obsession unhealthy!!!
