Jason - a PLB is well & good, but by the time the satellite picks you up, reports it to Maryland, they notify local search and rescue, and a boat comes out to look for you, it could be days, and you could be in very bad shape. What we really want is a device that will send our position to our own dive boat, or another boat in the area, and does not require the boat to have a dedicated receiving unit. Such a device exists. It is called a SARSAT, and it sends a signal to the radar screen of any vessel within miles, showing a course to your position. An example can be seen at www.mcaorals.co.uk/SART.htm Only problem is - how do you take it on a dive? Perhaps you can convince somebody to produce a compact unit with a diving canister. It would be so nice to be back on the dive boat in an hour, instead of floating out to see as it gets dark, hoping that a satellite is passing overhead, and that it will take less than 2 weeks for the Indonesian coast guard to get a search boat out to Raja Ampat. Thanks to Nick Fenley for alerting me to this device.
