I winced each time the shot was replayed of Jim getting whacked.

I know from my prior experience, that the whale knew Jim was there. And chose to give Jim a piece of his mind.

Mike: Since you are getting cold while diving in California, I would like to suggest you start diving in a drysuit. It makes such a BIG difference in your comfort, enjoyment and concentration levels.

Position your strobes slightly behind the "film plane" to reduce backscatter. - Nancy Boucha

Aim your strobes straight ahead like headlights.
After you think your strobes are properly aligned, turn your camera towards yourself, visually check the strobe positioning and take a shot.

Then examine your shot for balanced lighting.
