Biography of Underwater Photographer Matt J. Weiss
I recently graduated from Skidmore college with a degree in Biology. Despite growing up in Manhattan, I have always loved the ocean and learned to dive as soon as I could. I decided to bring a camera down with me only a few years ago when I wanted to show my cynical new yorker friends the amazing underwater world. Since then I have been hooked.
I am the editor for DivePhotoGuide.com and the Adminstrator and Chief Web Master for the New York Underwater Photographic Society-NYUPS.org
As a relatively new underwater photographer, I hope to learn from the great photographers in the DPG community.

What I look for in a Dive Operator:
I have only two requirements- that a Dive Operator is both safe and friendly. Safety must come first, and it's always nice to be treated with respect and greeted with a smile.

When Keri first showed me this shot, I knew it was a winner. What an incredible image.

That shot might be favorite underwater photograph.

Big thanks to DEMA for organizing these IRC seminars. The quality of the talks this year was outstanding.

I don't think I've ever seen a crab like this. Where is this? Awesome image.

I am looking forward to many of these seminars -- especially Daniel Botelho's (who is always interesting), the Backscatter presentation on fluorescent photography and I love the concept behind Dietmar's presentations -- making money!
Oct 11, 2011
Thank you! Talk to you soon at DEMA!

Thank you David and Jeff. Appreciate it!

Big win - but still can't believe some of the comments made by the opposing senators.

It's cool to see major companies like Samsung, Sony and Panasonic working together to create a standard. Seems like an excellent idea.

You know its gotta be good to see Joe up at 4AM! Killer shot. When you gonna take me?
Jul 25, 2011
I love the larger brother of these guys. Crazy how cheap storage has become - $95 starting price.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. We are very excited about the magazine!

Gotta give it up to Oceana and January Jones for getting someone main stream behind the shark message.

Watched it a few times now. Great idea and execution. Best trout picture ever.

Videographers -- take note! Wonder if it will become the standard for high speed I/O technology?
Jan 7, 2011
Thanks guys. You'd both love the cenotes!

Ah the goby factor. I've read many studies but never seen it in a graph.

Kandace -- thanks for the kind words. So glad the article helped. I totally agree with you, Lembeh is a special place and the critters there are sometimes so odd it's alarming! Already planning my next trip there as well and suffice it to say, I can't wait.

Stephen - Glad you enjoyed the coverage. It was quite a year for new products. Hopefully next year you can look around for yourself!

Tony's sperm whale shot is out of this world.
Sep 22, 2010
Corey, I couldn't agree more. This is special.

I know! it out shines the D300s in most areas. D300s still has it beat with its 51 focus points, but it still doesn't use the their new speedy Expeed 3 processor that from all reports is super fast. However, Nikon is still marketing it as mid-level. They better have something special for the DX00 upgrade.
Aug 12, 2010
I agree, Eric. Laz managed to take full advantage, too. What a story.
Jun 8, 2010
Thanks Steve. Right back at you with your review.

Esteban-- Congratulations on winning and also on the new born!!

Kandace, you'll have a great time. If you're a coral person, check out Buyat. Pretty spectacular.

Hey Tim,
You are right about the format of files. Same as ipod etc... I also agree with your gripes on the iTunes interface. It seems outdated since it used to be in fact, iTunes, but now its more like an iHub for music, video and syncing. I still lug around a macbook pro to the office and then back home, so I have dock which makes helps when I don't want to break things down. Still the iPad comes everywhere with me, as it always being on and having battery power is efficient and useful. Makes me think that our basic computer module - mouse, keyboard, on/off with long start-up times is outdated as well now. After all, its been the same core system since inception.

I think a point we missed and also makes the iPad more appealing, one that I am only realizing now that I have taken the iPad on 20+ hour flight with me is it's battery life. I watched movies, played HD 3D games and listened to music on the iPad the entire time I was awake for my flight to Singapore (granted, I probably sleep more than the average person on flights) and I still had 40 percent battery life left. The computer and iPhone stayed in the bag the entire time (both woulda been long dead had I needed to use them)

Hey Kay,
Starting this hobby as college student, I completely understand your concerns. It would be very hard to determine how much a photographers underwater set up is worth, though. Someone can always claim bought all the fancy gear used for less than 1000 dollars.
What we try to do is to select the winners based on the quality of a "photograph," not just the image of the most bizarre or interesting subject that is found in a exotic destination. Take March's winner for example, it's of a blenny, a species found all over the world. It was the lighting, which could've easily be executed with a small, simple set-up that made it such an amazing shot. It was not his set-up that won Mark Fuller the 1st place, but his creativity.
Sure, not being able to spend a lot of money on a fancy rig or exotic travel will put someone at a handicap, but hopefully that inspires them to try to be more creative with what they have and make some amazing images rather than just give up!

Carol-
We had to make the sacrifice of not showing all the entries with the new uploading system. It may be something we add in the future, but, unfortunately, as for now, there is no way to see the other entries. This is the way most contest work though. Thanks for offering to help Robert, he and anyone else can feel free to email me using the support category in the contact us page ( divephotoguide.com/contact). We are more than happy to help!

Hi Robert -
Carol provided you with a great explanation of what a tag is used for. They have nothing to do with entering photos into the contest. For help on how to enter your photos, visit this page by copying and pasting it into your browser:

I agree, great job of taking advantage of the moment and getting perfect composition and lighting.
Feb 25, 2010
I just kept finding him in these places, it wasn't planned at all...
Feb 2, 2010
Thanks, man. Looking forward to seeing all the images from your trip.
Jan 29, 2010
Thanks Jason. That was a serious piece of glass. Trip was good fun.
Jan 26, 2010
Yes, I experienced a similar inconvenience on an international flight going to the U.S. and also I could not leave my seat for the final hour. Overall, I don't think it will drastically be worse, but it will become an even bigger pain...
Jan 25, 2010
Thanks, Doug! Shooting with that lens was so much fun. It's super sharp and focuses really fast. Now if it only didn't cost $12,000...
Jan 14, 2010
Thanks for doing the research Jason. I am not surprised by your findings, the same issue occurred for those wanting to upgrade from the D300 to D300s. I, personally, like the Subal approach, which is make a new back that can be sold separately. They also did this for the D300s. I can see why Aquatica and Sea & Sea went with entire new housings for the D300s with fiber optics, but this is not important for the D3 housings.
Jan 13, 2010
Very cool! I don't know why but it reminds me of the movie Avatar...
Jan 13, 2010
Awesome article as always Mike. I like the goby and nudi from the video as well.
Jan 7, 2010
Keri is traveling throughout South East Asia at the moment. Since Keri is the brains behind the SubSee I am sure he will have plenty to say when he gets back.
Dec 29, 2009
Gordon, you have come a long way since the last time I saw you. This is an excellent shot, man! Like Mike said, keep up the good work.
Dec 13, 2009
I love this camera in combination with the olympus housing and using Inon lenses. I still think it's a great entry camera after all these years. RAW output is great, but it's a little slow...

Hey everyone, just a reminder that we are no longer using the tag system. If you have images tagged for future or current contests, they will no longer be added to the contest. Sorry about that. The new system though is much easier and only takes a second. Simply use the image uploader in the current competition page to enter images from your current gallery, or to upload a new one. It really only takes a second!

This was the first strobe I ever used. For the price, it works well. The is so much difference between using no strobe and this strobe, so if you dont want to spend a ton of money on one of the more advanced strobes, this is a good choice. It will improve your images far more than upgrading cameras. It is not comparable to the more advanced sea and sea, ikelite, inon strobes though.
Dec 2, 2009
Hey everyone-thanks for the kind words. As mentioned we worked really hard on the site, so it's nice to hear you are enjoying it. Please help to make this an even better community by leaving comments and reviewing your equipment
Dec 1, 2009
Mike, I agree. It's cool that students are thinking about new concepts like this. Erin's concept is great.
Nov 25, 2009
I completely agree. I can't tell what is i I like so much about this image, but I really, really like it.
Nov 25, 2009
Thanks for the comments guys. Christian - no snoot was used on my strobe, but it seems like a lot more people are experimenting with snoots underwater now and I would like to try it out.
Nov 24, 2009
multiple users, hundreds of dives, over 10 countries and this housing works great after I am not even sure how many years. I like the nexus port system with screw on so I am big fan.
Nov 24, 2009
I use this lens in conjunction with my Nexus housing and the 4" dome port made specifically for that lens. With this set-up you can get really wide angle of view at a really close -focus. It can basically focus on the dome and is great for close focus wide angle

This is a great strobe for the money. It's relatively inexpensive but still is a nice strobe. Really good for a beginner. I wouldn't mind a stronger strobe for W/A , however. Also, I wish the strobe setting was so wasn't to accidently switch into the slave mode.
Nov 23, 2009
I really like the direction Aquatica is going in with fiber optics. what do you other people think of fiber optics vs. "standard" wired connectors?
Nov 23, 2009
I agree, this is a really powerful image. One of my favorite hammerhead school underwater photographs.
Nov 21, 2009
This shoot out looks like a ton of fun. Fantastic winning images.
Oct 23, 2009
Just got to play with one these at PhotoPlus. Video is nice feature and much like D90. Only 720p is a bummer though.
Oct 23, 2009
Just got to play with one of these bad boys at PhotoPlus. They wouldn't let me shoot anything on my own card because it was just a sample camera, not up to specs yet...but it looks awesome.
Sep 15, 2009
Hey Guus. Not sure. I have heard some stories about the 5050 being able to take the later CF cards, some that they can't. I will look into it...
Sep 10, 2009
TJ- thanks for the kind words. I highly encourage the trip. If you do go next year, make sure to come say hi at our booth.
PadiPro- Sama Sama! Can't wait to go next year.

Hi Margo and Stephanie. Palawan is a great place to see this stuff. Also while there I saw some really exciting topside surprises...but I wont ruin them. My comprehensive article on Club Paradise and Palawan is coming out this week!
Feb 24, 2009
congratulations to all the winners. Probably the best winner portfolio I have ever seen.
Jan 27, 2009
Thanks for posting this Jason. This is the quick, simple breakdown I have been looking for!
Nov 14, 2008
Thanks. Seeing the housing was one of the highlights of DEMA for me.
Nov 2, 2008
Amos, it was nice to meet you at DEMA. I always love reading your pieces when they come up on DPG, and this one was really special. The images are fantastic and the write up itself made me excited for you guys. I hope to one day have a similar experience.
Nov 1, 2008
Gotta give it up to Jason on this one. Well deserved my man.
Nov 1, 2008
Great coverage Jules. Wish I could be there. Still recovering from DEMA though! Can't believe Alex Mustard is back at it again.
Oct 30, 2008
Wow, this is very, very cool! As I was running around the show all day, I kept noticing its progression and was more than impressed each time. I can imagine it on your wall now, its gonna look great.
Oct 14, 2008
Wow, really amazing stuff Annie. Congratulations on a very nice website and concept. It looks great.
Aug 21, 2008
I think many of us agree. Its completely incomprehensible to me. I actually was able to helicopter to the ice flats and photograph the harp seals just before the seal hunt in 2006. By far the most endearing animal I have ever encountered.
Aug 7, 2008
Thanks Keri, but I think it was your head shot from your DPG introduction article that I showed her which did it.
Jul 22, 2008
Keri and I crossed paths while we were both in Bali during our trips. He has several other shots that I am sure you would also love Andrea. I guess the world will have to wait for the whip coral goby shot, huh bud?
Apr 28, 2008
Not just light envy, but total gear envy! Is that Annie Crawley's massive video setup you have about 6 shots up? Looks like an awesome trip, wish I could have been there. I don't think any of us feel bad for you being stuck in Wakatobi for the day.
Feb 19, 2008
So, so sad. Hard to read, but so necessary to spread the word. Thanks
Feb 14, 2008
Not sure...That picture from fishbase certainly looks different than the species in question, but frogfish are so variable its hard for me to tell especially since I'm no expert? Anyone know what distinguishing characteristics Robert used to ID this fish? Either way, a truly beautiful animal.
Jan 17, 2008
Awesome stuff! I'm guessing number 4? or the PSP, thats a little ridiculous. Cool though. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on 11 for a little while. Nice idea. Thanks for the report
Jan 12, 2008
interesting that you didnt get checked. One would assume they would keep a special eye out since its a new regulation. I guess thats airlines for you..
Jan 1, 2008
I just flew back to the states and found out the new rule. I think, as stated, it should just be another inconvenience. Also, by the way, you are not the only person to have stolen gear in San Juan. Its a real problem there and thieves do their research. They target the top brands. Dont bring your pelican to San Juan. Happy New Year
Dec 12, 2007
Nice to see a competition getting some serious coverage. Seems as if the contest is doing a great thing by highlighting conservation issues.
Dec 11, 2007
I just found this gem under all the DEMA news. The Macro Life of Malaysia book is, in my opinion, the bible of muck diving. Can't wait for this to come out...Any word on release date?
