Biography of Underwater Photographer Sandrah Gurash
My start in diving was as a multiple time, resort course drop out. No problem in the pool, but once we were in the ocean and an instructor was controlling my decent, I'd start thinking that if anything happened to the instructor I'm on my own and really know nothing. Eventually I did the full cert course, got my own gear and have enjoyed diving at every opportunity I get for the last 8 yrs.
I came to underwater photography when my husband (Drew Wohl) was ready to upgrade his first digital set up. Getting me interested meant that he'd always have a good reason to buy new rigs and a home for the old ones. (How could I say no to his purchases when they mean that I get something new too?)
I'm passionate about the oceans and have gotten involved in a variety of conservation projects and helping to raise awareness of issues affecting the health of our world's coral reefs. This has included producing short videos with my husband. We've won and placed in competitions, had our work shown at SDUFEX, and at local venues. I also do ocean and reef conservation presentations at schools. If my photos or video can show just one person what's in our oceans and convince them that the oceans are worth protecting, then it's all worth it.

What I look for in a Dive Operator:
My favorite dive operators have a casual, friendly and fun attitude, keep the group small, are very service oriented, have DMs who if not local, have been diving and living in the area long enough that they could be. I don't select my dive ops based on price but I do want to feel that I'm getting a good value for the price I pay.

All US cities with thriving Chinatown's have shark fin trade. On a recent trip to SFO, we were ready to give up on a place to eat in Chinatown because every restaurant we looked at had shark fin something on the menu. We decided to give it 3 more tries, and finally found one that didn't have it on the menu and was very adamant telling us they do not use any shark fin. I'm glad CA is pushing for a ban. I would like NY to do the same... since I live in the NYC area.
