Biography of Underwater Photographer Carol Cox
I'm retired and live in Florida. I learned to dive in 1991 when I was stationed on Guam. I started underwater photography a year later with a Sea & Sea Motormarine II. I finally upgraded to digital in 2007 and love it!
I work with the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association in the Florida panhandle as a research diver, photographer, treasurer, and secretary. The all-volunteer organization has deployed over 150 artificial reefs near Mexico Beach, FL. The reefs greatly improve fish habitat, providing recreational opportunities for divers and fishermen. I am currently working on a project to photograph all the different varieties of marine life that inhabit our artificial reefs.
I am also working with REEF.org to develop seminars on fish identification in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Check REEF.org for free online seminars you can take when you aren't blowing bubbles.
I dive in the Gulf of Mexico throughout the summer, often monitoring the artificial reefs. If there are other divers in the area that would like to get involved, I would love to hear from you!

What I look for in a Dive Operator:
Adventure. Freedom. My husband and I like to follow our own profile and escape from the crowd. I like to take my time so my subject gets used to me.

Where is a "dislike" button when you need one?

I didn't see anything like that when I went to the Red Sea. The photo reminds me of some of the caverns we saw on Palau. I went a long time ago--I shot slides on a Sea & Sea Motormarine camera.

Your photos of the grass beds are beautiful. I hope the locals learn to take care of wha they have before they lose it. I live near a pristine bay in Florida that has a large sea grass preserve. I know how important the ecosystem is.

I love this shot. It's rare to see so much of the flamingo tongue out of its shell. ~Carol

We can swing a trip every one or two years, but we need to start venturing out past the Caribbean more often. Our next trip will be with friends and they won't go so far away from home. Oh well, I hope vis is good in the Gulf of Mexico this summer. Then I can at least do a lot of diving in my back yard and further my quest to show all the great life we have here that isn't mentioned being this far north in the fish IDbooks.

Robert, did the link from Matt Weiss help? If not, I'll be glad to take you through it step by step. You will know that your photos are in the contest if you do it correctly. I just wish there was a way to see all the photos in the contest. I used to be able to find them with the search feature, but now there is no way to know which photos have been posted to the contest. ~Carol

What is a tag? Key words so that people looking for a certain subject in the "Search" feature in the upper right corner can find your photo. For this, you could use "trunkfish, portrait, the location this was taken, your name" etc... Hope this helps. ~Carol

This is a great photo. Thanks for checking my photos and commenting on my hermit crab photo. I also live in southeastern US and would love to be able to travel all over like you do. How do you swing it? I've got the time, and some money, but still, how do you swing it? ~Carol

I love this photo. The thumbnail really pops and the full-size photo delivers the goods. Good luck in the Portrait competition. ~Carol

Can anyone identify this damselfish? It is very similar to the Beaugregory or the Dusky Damselfish, but neither of them have the bright blue margins on the fins. This was taken in the northern Gulf of Mexico on an artificial reef about 50 feet deep.

I love the simplicty, especially when using MyMode settings. The batteries last a long time when using the xD card. What I don't like is the sllght lag in the focus and shutter. You have to anticipate to get a good shot, but sometimes that isn't possible.
