Biography of Underwater Photographer Brian Skerry

Brian Skerry began his career as a teenager, photographing subjects in the waters of his native New England. Today, his nearly year-round assignment schedule has him traveling to all corners of the globe, pursuing underwater images and stories. A National Geographic Magazine photographer, Brian.s impressive body of work, which includes 9 feature stories in NGM, has shed light on the natural history of marine species and ecosystems ranging from those beneath arctic ice to remote tropical reefs. His recent passion is turning the spotlight unto some of the most serious and pressing environmental issues facing our oceans.
An award-winning photographer, Brian also serves as a Senior Editor for Fathoms and is the Photographic Correspondent for Sport Diver Magazine in the U.S. His work has been featured in magazines such as People, Sports Illustrated, US News and World Report, GEO, National Wildlife, Playboy, Nature.s Best, Smithsonian, Esquire, Audubon, Maxim, Men.s Journal as well as in countless other publications worldwide. Brian resides in Massachusetts with his wife and two children.

What I look for in a Dive Operator:
I look for a few essentials, in terms of a dive operator. The most important thing for me is local knowledge of marine life. I really appreciate an expert that knows his or her own backyard extremely well. Since I usually charter boats for my own use when working on assignment, I need an operator that understand the subtleties of local tides, seasons, habitats and how to work with specific animals found there. I also look for flexibility. My needs are often quite different from typical charters, so having an operator that understands why I might need to remain in one place for days is especially helpful. Running a dive boat/business can be very demanding work. I remain grateful for those with a real passion for the sea and that give 110%.
