I was born in this island and I grew up on the neighboring island. People of the Philippine Islands (sorry I won't call my people filipinos since that term is still debatable) despite having the luxury in living 7,107 islands, still are poorly educated when it comes to our natural resources. The govt is corrupt and there is little support for welfare and job seekers despite the fact that we have the most college graduates, there is no job for them. The fishermen found a way to make a living by feeding the whale shark instead of hunting, but the problem is the when there is too much exposure too quickly there is bound to have problems. This type of tourism is very new. so it will suffer a lot of trial and errors along the way and some mishandling. For arm chair activist out there before call this people ignorant why don't you formulate a plan for them to make a living before telling them to stop. I honestly believe the govt should help out and even the coast guard, there will be rivalries from the other fishing villages and i hope no violent problems will occur. I hope to visit home this year or next to ask around what has been going on lately. Great work Steve, we'll grab a beer when I'll see you again.
