Biography of Underwater Photographer Mark Thorpe
I started shooting underwater photographs way back in the early 90's during a military posting to Djibouti, as soon as my head went underwater for the first time I knew I had found my calling.
On leaving the service I immediately went through my dive training to Divemaster and moved to Tenerife in the Canary Islands to continue up through that to my Instructor and get some work experience.
One thing led to another and I ended up providing a filming service to dive shops having bought my first video camera, a Sony Hi8 3CCD (king of the hill back then) and an Ikelite housing. Since then I have lived and worked in places such as Indonesia, Yap in Micronesia and Palau.
I now film with a RED One Digital Cinema Camera for professional TV and Film commissions. I am based on the island of Bali, Indonesia.

What I look for in a Dive Operator:
Professional and open minded approach to the, at times demanding needs of the imaging diver. Clean rooms, friendly staff, good food and a fun atmosphere.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately the footage belongs to National Geographic but maybe soon I will be able to post a small clip or two of items shot in my own time.
Cheers,
Mark.

Thank you Jason. watch this space as I have just bought an array of Laser and IR trigger systems to set up water collision and true water drop stop photography in my small home studio. It will be a lot of fun. Thanks for the comments on my work, I wouldn't ever change it for the World and it pleases me to share that with you and others.

I like to celebrate the medium of water, I work in it, I revel in it. I also like to think that we should appreciate photographs OF it. Underwater photography is an amazing discipline and I have many professional friends who create magic with their cameras. However I think we overlook the complexities of the medium we delve into, it is an amazingly complex medium, and one of stunning characteristics and idiosyncrasies.
