Just when everyone got used to the product, frozen packaged flyingfish fillets imported from Tobago, so convenient and so easy to prepare, they seemed to have disappeared from supermarket freezer display cabinets.
Certainly in 2006 they were simply not available in most of the nation's supermarkets. Now they are back, at least in some. But the irony. If you find a package and read the packaging labeling you are stunned. The frozen fillets are labeled as being "processed and packaged in Trinidad and Tobago", not the "product of Trinidad and Tobago", nor is the name of the processor given.
One retailer has revealed that they are imported from Barbados! Whatever happened to the Tobago source? Tobago fishing sources tell us that the past two seasons, 2006 and 2007 have seen a drastic decline in catches, resulting in cut backs in the few processing operations in Tobago and hence reduction of exports...
