Welfare Groups In Singapore Fight For Whale Shark
By Matt J. Weiss, August 28, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
Singapore, not always known as the most shark friendly place in the world, is fighting for the freedom of one. Welfare groups have banded together to save a whale shark from being put in the captivity in the oceanarium of the resort Sentosa.
Whale sharks are obviously very tricky to care for due to their size and their range. It seems the only viable reason for keeping a whale shark in captivity is to create awareness and love for the animal. The resorts claims it will do this and give the shark top class care, but considering the fate of whale sharks in other, larger aquariums, and that there is no consensus that captive animals are helping the sharks at all it seems it would be a ludicrous publicity stunt for the resort.
