In a reversal of an official Obama-era acknowledgement of the threats which climate change poses to the Pacific walrus and its shrinking habitat, the Trump administration has indicated it will look to remove the Arctic keystone species from protection under the Endangered Species Act.
While protected in 2011 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to threats from diminishing sea ice, the same organization has now reversed its position, stating now that it cannot be determined if the Pacific walrus will become endangered by 2060.
