Video: Underwater Videographer Gets Whacked By Humpback

By Jason Heller, April 12, 2009 @ 01:00 AM (EST)

Having just come back from Socorro where we were able to get in the water with humpbacks (albeit the encounters were limited), this video really caught my attention. I've heard stories of divers getting seriously injured by humpback fins and tails. Like any animal, if you piss them off, they will react. Of course most of the time this is not the case, and I've heard far more stories ofthe humpbacks gracefully maneuvering their fins and tails inches over divers' heads. But this encounter reminds us that whales are wild animals and we owe them the respect that they deserve. The videographer in this case is an excellent free diver and has done nothing overtly obivous to annoy the whale, yet he gets a good tail whacking.

I winced each time the shot was replayed of Jim getting whacked.

I know from my prior experience, that the whale knew Jim was there. And chose to give Jim a piece of his mind.

We were in the same area a few years ago and I got hit in the head by the tail of a baby humpback. It knocked my mask off and camera out of my hand. I had a huge hematoma on my arm and my face swelled up like I had my wisdom teeth extracted! I was told the baby humpbacks are not aware of their body parts.
