A group of ecotourists from the Shedd Aquarium were treated to a rare sighting of two oarfish swimming in shallow water in Baja, California.
Oarfish live in depths of 3,300 feet under the surface and so are rarely seen by humans. With their long, undulating bodies, giant oarfish are thought to have inspired stories of “sea serpents” long ago.
The pair of oarfish in the video above swam around for about 30 minutes before beaching themselves and dying.
