
US Navy Continues Sonar Testing

When David and I were diving in southeast Florida almost exactly 2 years ago, we were thrilled to see a pod of dolphins, which we were told were a rare sight in the area in February. A few days later we were disturbed to see a more common sight - a submarine conducting sonar testing. When we returned home, we learned that a number of dolphins had stranded in the Florida Keys, a relatively short distance from where we were diving, a few days after we saw them.
We don't know whether it was the same pod. But we do know that sonar is extremely harmful to marine mammals. Despite hard data that has linked sonar use to marine mammal strandings, the military continues to use this destructive practice in the name of "homeland security."...
