As delegates in Nairobi are getting ready for the United Nations Environment Summit, member nations are being urged to consider a treaty banning plastics from ending up in our seas. The treaty would put pressure on individual nations to limit the amount of land-based plastic waste that makes its way into the sea.
Currently, it is only illegal for ships to toss plastic waste overboard. Some have said the treaty might mirror the Paris Climate Agreement, whereby nations would be legally bound to adhere to the voluntary actions they commit to. There are also talks of creating a Plastic Agency within the UN to deal with the enormous plastic issue.
