U.S. to Limit Ship Speed at Sea

By Wendy Heller, August 27, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

The U.S. government has proposed an 18.5 speed limit for ships in several ports.  This new law will apply during certain times of the year in hopes of sparing the lives of north atlantic right whales who have died in collisions with ships especially the larger vessels.

Scientists believe that only 300 right whales remain, they express a great deal of anxiety because the population is on the brink of extinction.  Environmentalists are dissappointed with the 'reduced area' this new law will cover, but it's a start in preserving the life of these endangered mammals.
