
Turtles Off Fishing Lines and Hooks

Recent studies suggest that fishing with circular hooks significantly reduces turtle bycatch and still ensures productive fishing. Through the Bycatch Initiative program important data was collected from fishing practices in the Eastern Pacific coasts of Central and South America.
Efforts are on way to eliminate long line fishing and incorporate circular hooks, fishing is one of the main sources for food and income in these regions. The goal is to shift to sustainable artisanal fishing, an example of conservation efforts and the fishing industry working together.
