Tsunami Waves Hit Japan, Ripples Reach North America’s West Coast

By Joseph Tepper, March 11, 2011 @ 02:39 PM (EST)
Source: CNN

With the powerful earthquake and subsequent tsunami waves hitting Japan at approximately 2:45 pm local time, officials feared that rippled effects would also hit Hawaii and the West Coast of the US and British Columbia, CA.

It now appears as though the destructive power of the swells has remained contained to the islands of Japan, leaving a path of destruction yet to be measured. Although the 8.9 magnitude earthquake –the most powerful in Japan’s history– produced tsunami waves of up to thirty feet high in Japan, less destructive swells of no more than 6 feet hit near the California/Oregon border.

Of course, our thoughts are with the hundreds lost, thousands missing, and countless more waiting to hear news from friends and family in Japan. More information on the breaking stories of this tragedy can be found on the CNN news page.
