The Trump administration announced it will not list the Pacific bluefin tuna as an endangered species even though the species population has decreased 97%. NOAA claims the fish population is still around 1.6 million, and while it’s not ideal, it is “far from endangered.” A scientific committee created by NOAA determined 140,000 fish are of spawning age.

Bluefin tuna are known to swim thousands of miles between California and Asia and are heavily sought after by sushi restaurants and patrons around the world. Each tuna can garner up to a $100,000 at auction. The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Chief Conservation Officer Margaret Spring had this to say: “Today’s decision by NOAA not to consider listing Pacific bluefin tuna under the Endangered Species Act does not change the dire status of Pacific bluefin tuna.”
