Tokina has been “thoroughly” testing its Nikon F-mount lenses with the Nikon full-frame Z7, Z6 and new cropped-sensor Z50 using Nikon’s FTZ mount adapter, and it turns out that there’s an issue that will interest—and perhaps upset—underwater photographers.
Tokina has issued a notice pointing out four lenses where autofocus doesn’t function: Tokina AT-X 70–200mm F4 FX VCM-S, Tokina AT-X M100 AF PRO D, Tokina AT-X 107 AF DX NH Fisheye and Tokina AT-X 107 AF DX Fisheye. You may not recognize it from the model name, but this last lens is Tokina’s 10–17mm fisheye, the go-to wide-angle lens for countless underwater shooters using cropped-sensor DSLRs. (The “NH” lens is just a full frame compatible version with the built-in hood removed.)
Tokina blames the lack of autofocus functionality on “mount adapter FTZ specifications” but doesn’t elaborate. There’s also no indication from the company whether they plan to fix the problem.

About compatibility of Tokina interchangeable lenses with Nikon Z 6, Z 7 and Z 50 cameras (updated)
We have thoroughly tested all current Tokina interchangeable lenses (Nikon F mount) with the Nikon Z 6, Nikon Z 7 and Nikon Z 50 mirrorless camera using the Nikon mount adapter FTZ.
The results confirm that current Tokina lens models showed no issues in general operations with the following exceptions:
- Tokina opera 50mm F1.4 FF
Issue: Compared with general conditions depending on aperture value AF speed might be slower.
- Tokina AT-X 70-200mm F4 FX VCM-S
Issue: AF communication error. However, the lens will operate normally in manual focus mode.
Please note that due to mount adapter FTZ specifications, the following Tokina lenses do not AF but will operate in manual focus mode:
- Tokina AT-X M100 AF PRO D
- Tokina AT-X 107 AF DX NH Fisheye
- Tokina AT-X 107 AF DX Fisheye
