Sony has announced a new line of CFast memory cards targeted at professional-level photographers. The G-series of memory cards are blazing fast with write speeds up to 510MB/s and read speeds of 530MB/s. The capacity of the cards is also aimed at pros: The CFast cards come in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB versions.
On one hand, the move makes sense with the increased specs of high frame rate still cameras and the proliferation of 4K video. The size and speed of the cards—combined with inherent durability of the CF design—should meet the needs of the most demanding users.
At the same time, the move could be seen as somewhat contradictory. The CFast cards compete directly with the XQD format—a technology invented and somewhat monopolized by Sony.
Regardless, the benefit is for the photographer looking for a new CFast option. The cards will be available in early 2018 with the following prices: $120 (32GB), $200 (64GB), and $350 (128GB).
