
Some Sharks Nearly Wiped Out

Researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science said the presence of sharks in the state's coastal waters should not surprise or alarm people.
Dean Grubbs, a researcher at VIMS, directs a yearly sampling of the sharks in Virginia waters that began in 1973. He said sharks do not target humans as prey. In fact, results from the shark survey say man is a greater threat to sharks. Some species have been nearly wiped out to satisfy markets for shark-fin soup and other specialty products, he said.
The survey has helped collect data that led to protection for dusky, sand, night, bignose and white sharks over the past 34 years...
