Mozambique is well known for its diving, which includes encounters with whale sharks and mantas. According to a recent article in the Guardian, this dive spot may be under threat from unchecked Chinese exploitation of fisherman trying to earn a small living and feed their families.
The coast of Africa has long been over-fished, and now it seems, based on interviews with local fisherman, that Chinese traders are providing more effective fishing gear and paying top dollar for shark fins and manta wings. There is little to no enforcement as there are limited patrols.
