
Shark Tournament Not Without Controversy

After a five-year absence, the Heritage Days shark fishing tournament is making a comeback on Saturday, drawing interest from fishermen and animal rights activists alike.
Everyone is excited, said Brett Bongarzone, who is organizing the contest. The old tournament never had more than 15 or 20 boats, and we have 30 boats registered.
But the decision by the Scituate Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the tournament comes as such events have come under fire from animal rights groups.
John Grandy, vice president for wildlife of the Humane Society of the United States, said the tournaments are cruel to sharks and imperil an already threatened species.
This is just killing for fun, he said...
